The problem is that there is a serious difference in the results you get from searching Google.com (or other domain) vs. what you see in the Ad Preview Tool. For example at this point when I search for my keyword on Google.com it is nowhere to be found, but in position number 1 on the Ad Preview. Another keyword may appear on a certain position but on the Ad Preview Tool on another position altogether. I don’t trust the Ad Preview Tool because of the inconsistent results and/or time lag.

The discrepancy is the entire reason to why you should use the AdWords Preview Tool. The AdWords ads that you see are associated with your search history, location, device etc. If your ads are national or state-wide, then you will see different results depending on what city you’re in. AdWords defines your Quality Score in geographical areas, which means that your results will sometimes differ depending on your location.
Also, if you always search for your own ads, but never click them and you sometimes click ads of your competitors Google will remember this. They can see “Hey, this guy never clicks xyz.com, so let’s stop showing those ads high”. Google is a money making machine and if one advertiser doesn’t result in revenue for them, then they will try to make changes or optimize in other ways.
I would personally never trust the results when it comes to AdWords ads and always use the Ad Preview Tool.
